Winter Wonderland....

Michigan can be an absolutely beautiful place in the winter. I love to watch it snow, it’s mesmerizing at times. I was just telling everyone at work, that it would be much easier to spot the deer in the woods across the street, if we had snow on the ground…..well, I got my wish. It snowed all day Sunday….there isn’t any great accumulation, maybe 4 inches, but there is a great accumulation of ice. It did snow hard enough to cover up the roads, you can’t see where any of the lines are…..there were some snow plows out Sunday evening, but all that accomplished was to pack down the snow and slush, so when the temperature drastically dropped that evening, the roads became a sheet of ice…..some spots bumpy, some spots dangerously smooth.

When I was driving to work Sunday while it was snowing…..I got a taste of how bad it was. I think my top speed was 25 m.p.h. I had to make a left turn into the restaurant parking lot……I was going about 5 m.p.h. during this procedure, and slid past the drive way…I would’ve just hopped the curb were it not for the many decades old wrought iron fence that sits firmly between the two driveways. I gingerly slid (on the wrong side of the road) to the next driveway and safely crawled into the parking lot.

As I was walking in, I was wondering how many cancellations we would have that day. I clocked in, went to say hi to the boss, and the first thing he told me was that the party of 40 cancelled. Okay, one down…..let’s see what happens with the rest….

I had a group of ten, that had only 1 no show. Two in that group came from across town, a 45 minute to an hour drive on a good day (depending on how many speed limit laws one decided to break) and one was in a wheelchair. Let’s hear it for the hearty souls! In this weather, some let anything stop them, some let nothing stop them.

We figured by Monday, the roads would be clear, we figured wrong. They were worse. It was so cold, all the traffic did was to pack down the ice and make it smoother. More cancellations. This does not make us happy during our busiest season of the year.

I have to leave shortly and pick up some supplies for a funeral luncheon at church, normally this would be a ten minute drive, I’m planning on 30 to 40 minutes, one way. Gotta love this winter wonderland.
